Graduate Research Roundtables

The Graduate Center for Literary Research (GCLR) supports graduate student writing and research through two Graduate Research Roundtables each academic year, typically held during the Fall and Winter quarters. These roundtables provide graduate students from across the humanities with opportunities to present their research, receive constructive feedback from peers and faculty, engage in interdisciplinary dialogue, and qualify for financial support to present their work at professional conferences.

How the Roundtables Work

Each Fall and Winter quarter, the GCLR issues a Call for Papers inviting graduate students to submit proposals to present their research. The GCLR Student Board reviews the submissions and selects three proposals for each roundtable. Selected participants will:

Present a 15–20-minute paper-in-progress.

Engage in an informal discussion and Q&A session with fellow presenters, faculty, and attendees.

Receive feedback to help develop their research for future presentations or publication.

Eligibility and Submission Guidelines

The roundtables welcome graduate students working across the humanities and encourage a wide range of disciplinary approaches, research topics, and methodologies. Eligible submissions include, but are not limited to, seminar papers, preliminary research, field examination projects, dissertation chapters, and other works in progress. All submissions must have a connection to the humanities. Graduate students may participate as presenters in up to two GCLR Roundtables during their graduate studies at UC Santa Barbara.

Conference Travel Funding

Graduate students who successfully present their research at a GCLR Roundtable become eligible to receive a travel grant of up to $500 to present a version of their roundtable paper at a professional meeting or academic conference. For additional information about eligibility, funding requirements, and the application process, please visit the Travel Grants page. Calls for Papers and Upcoming Roundtables Calls for Papers are announced during the Fall and Winter quarters. Graduate students interested in presenting their research are encouraged to check the News and Events section of the GCLR homepage regularly for announcements, submission guidelines, and application deadlines.
